Gemma Triay and Aranza Osoro crowned champions against Caldera and Llaguno, and Leo Augsburger together with Pablo Cardona defeat the San Diego Stingrays in the men's final

San Sebastián, July 13, 2025 – A historic day for Flowrida GOATS, who have conquered both Pro Padel League titles in San Sebastián, achieving a memorable double and strengthening their position as leaders in the overall standings.
In the women's final, Gemma Triay and Aranza Osoro showcased their class to convincingly defeat Bea Caldera and Patty Llaguno, from the Arkansas Matrix team, by 6-3 / 6-4. A few hours later, it was Pablo Cardona and Leo Augsburger who completed the feat by overcoming Lucas Bergamini and Maxi Sánchez, representatives of the San Diego Stingrays, 6-4 / 6-4.
With these two new titles, Flowrida GOATS not only celebrate a week of success at the Real Club de Tenis in San Sebastián, but also extend their lead at the top of the PPL standings, further consolidating their status as the team to beat on the North American circuit.
In the women's final, the solidity and aggressiveness of Triay and Osoro proved too much for a pair who had been surprising throughout the week. Although Caldera and Llaguno fought hard, the precise play and tempo control of the Flowrida GOATS players made the difference in each set, confirming their status as favorites and capping off a perfect week.
Meanwhile, in the men's category, Cardona and Augsburger extended their winning streak in Basque territory with steady, flawless play. Although the Stingrays put up resistance, the GOATS once again demonstrated their lethal on-court chemistry: the Argentine dominated powerfully from the baseline while the Spaniard shone at the net. The men's title cements Flowrida as the standout team of this first international stop on the circuit.
New York Atlantics and Houston Volts complete the podium in Donostia
In the men's third-place match, Juan Tello and Jon Sanz of the New York Atlantics defeated Agustín Tapia and Fede Chingotto of the Miami Padel Club, 6-4 / 6-2. The Spanish-Argentine duo controlled the pace of the match confidently, dominating from the start with energy, tactical precision, and great aggressiveness in the rallies.
Meanwhile, in the women's draw, the Houston Volts secured the podium thanks to the victory of Marta Caparrós and Marta Barrera, who won a very tight match against Marta Ortega and Sofía Araujo of Las Vegas Smash, 6-4 / 2-6 / 10-4. The Houston players managed to bounce back after dropping the second set and showed composure in the super tie-break, concluding their participation in Donostia with a much-celebrated bronze medal.

Flowrida GOATS dominate in San Sebastián with a double victory that strengthens their lead in the Pro Padel League

A new racket sport is gaining popularity in the U.S. and it is called padel. Born in Mexico, it's a fast-paced blend of squash, tennis, and racquetball.
"If you look at the numbers, padel is way bigger than pickleball actually, and it's kind of taking over even in the U.S.," said Pascal Collard, owner of the SVB Tennis and Wellness Complex. "This is the start here."

Taking the court first was the women's doubles match featuring Marta Ortega (world no. 6 and former world no. 1) and Alejandra Alonso of the Las Vegas Smash who secured an early break, and 5-3 lead, in the first set against Alejandra Salazar and Veronica Virseda (world no. 15) of the Cancun Waves. After closing out the first set 6-3, Ortega/Alonso continued the momentum in the second set winning the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, against Salazar/Virseda to take the first match of the day for the Smash.
In the men's doubles match, Gonzalo Alfonso (world no. 1 doubles team) and Pablo Cardona of the Smash went up against Daniel Gutierrez (world no. 10) and Teodoro Zapata of the Waves with the first set coming down to a deciding tiebreaker. With the Smash capturing the tiebreaker to win the first set, Alfonso/Cardona went down 0-2 in the second set after a quick break of serve by Gutierrez/Zapata. Later breaking back against the Waves, the dynamic duo of the Smash were able to capture a second break and the second set 7-5 to close out the match and secure the Smash's spot in Sunday's final.
In Saturday's second semifinal match, things really heated in the night session with the Florida Goats going up against the New York Atlantics in a battle between two teams who made their PPL debut this year. In the first match of the night, the women's doubles featured Aranzazu Orso (world no. 17) and Gemma Triay (world no. 3) of the Goats taking on Andrea Ustero and Virginia Riera of the Atlantics. Jumping out to a quick lead, Orso/Triay captured the first set 6-3 for the Goats against Ustero/Riera and continued into the second set with an early 3-1 break. Closing out the second set 6-3, Orso/Triay won the match in straight sets to get the Goats one step closer to advancing to Sunday's final.
Bringing the heat in the men's doubles match Saturday night, Martin Di Nenno (world no. 6) and Pablo Lijo took the courts for the Goats with Federico Chingotto (world no. 4) and Luis Campagnolo representing the Atlantics. Grabbing a quick break in the first set for the Goats, Di Nenno/Santos went up 2-0 against Chingotto/Campagnolo, but later were broken back by the Atlantics who forced the first set to a deciding tiebreaker. Eventually winning the first set in a tiebreaker, the Goats were not able to continue the momentum in the second set with Chingotto/Campagnolo making a strong comeback to capture it 6-2. Coming down to a deciding third set tiebreaker, the Atlantics won it 10-2 to even the team matchup 1-1 and force a deciding mixed doubles match to see who would advance to Sunday's final against the Smash.
Taking the court at 10:00 p.m. Saturday night in the first mixed doubles match of the day, and deciding set of play, was Pablo Lima and Gemma Triay of the Goats against Virginia Riera and Federico Chingotto of the Atlantics. With Riera/Chingotto getting an early break and 4-2 lead for the Atlantics, Lima/Triay of the Goats continued to fight hard and later broke back to even the deciding set 5-5. Eventually prevailing though in an extremely close, deciding set, were the Atlantics who defeated the Goats 7-5 to win the team matchup and advance to Sunday's final where they will face the Smash.
With Sunday's final lineup set, the Cancun Waves will take on the Flowrida Goats in the first match of the day, and playoffs for third and fourth place, at 11 a.m. PT. Las Vegas Smash, New York Atlantics Blaze into Sunday Final in San Diego

San Sebastián, July 10, 2025 – Leo Augsburger and Pablo Cardona earned a valuable win for the Flowrida GOATS after defeating Franco Dal Bianco and Álex Ruiz of the Cancún Waves 6-4, 6-3 in another Pro Padel League matchday held Wednesday in San Sebastián.
In a highly intense duel, Augsburger and Cardona set themselves apart from the back of the court with a combination of power and aggression, which proved key to taking the first set 6-4 after an incredible comeback. In the second, the GOATS duo consolidated their dominance with solid defense and excellent tactical awareness, closing out the match 6-3 to secure three crucial points in the team standings.
Despite the loss, Franco and Álex of Cancún Waves showed great chemistry. The match was decided by small details, but both players were very coordinated and knew how to leverage each other's strengths. The result does not take away from the positive impressions left by the Mexican team's men's pair.
With this performance, the Flowrida GOATS strengthen their competitive position on the table and confirm the good form of their main men's duo, who are clear about their goal. "We want to give it our all to go after that title," said Leo after the match. Cardona echoed the sentiment: "We played a great match. Tomorrow we have another intense day, and we want to fight to win this week."
After their interview, they spoke to the media on site and said they get along "very well on and off the court," though they joked about their relationship. "Well, I think we get along better off the court than on it," the Spaniard said with a laugh.
Gemma Triay and Aranza Osoro Start with a Win
Gemma Triay and Aranza Osoro, representing the Flowrida GOATS, defeated Sofía Saiz and Marina Lobo of the Cancún Waves 6-2, 6-3. The Spanish-Argentine duo clearly dominated the first set, setting the tempo from the very first games. In the second set, Saiz and Lobo tried to mount a response but couldn't overcome the solidity of Triay and Osoro, who closed the match in straight sets to secure another win for the Florida team.
The "Viking" expressed her excitement about sharing the court with the player from Menorca in this team competition: "It's very easy to play by her side. I'm very happy to be back in the PPL and to bring the team a victory." Triay, for her part, also showed great appreciation for her partner: "We get along really well, and I have a great time with her. That helps you enjoy it even more. The feelings are wonderful, and I also want to thank the PPL for how well they're running everything."

Leo Augsburger and Pablo Cardona Deliver in Their PPL Debut in San Sebastián

Padel is entering a new phase of tremendous opportunity and potential.

The U.S. has just surpassed 1,000 courts and amazingly, 1,000,000 players, up from near zero when we formed the Pro Padel League (PPL) just a few years ago.
Most people assume that as padel grows, the professional game will naturally evolve with it.
But growth alone doesn't create a successful professional sport. We've seen this in racquet sports for decades: players traveling constantly around the world on their own dime, their earnings solely tied to results, negotiating their own sponsorships, and often spending more on tournaments than they make.
In professional tennis, ~50% of the total prize money is earned by just 20 players amongst the sport's top 100 players. In 2025, the top two male and female players earned more than $10M in prize money, and only the top ~30 male and female players earned over $2M. Many aspiring pro tennis players rely on another job to support their tennis careers. Contrast that with the NBA, where in 2025, 420 players were on fully guaranteed contracts, with an average salary of ~$14M.
At the Pro Padel League, we are building the future of racquet sports: an athlete-first league that will support hundreds of full-time male and female padel players. With $15M recently raised and backing from major professional sports investors, we're moving quickly to bring this model to life.
Following our upcoming PPL Draft on April 30, players will be signed to guaranteed multi-year contracts. And with all tournament expenses covered and first-class support, our athletes will be best positioned for long-term success.
When it comes to earning potential, we treat men and women the same: equal prize money and an equitable expanded competition calendar which gives players consistent and more frequent opportunities to compete, earn and be seen, while still preserving a true off-season.
Padel is a team sport and our players will compete with support from their franchise, league and fans. With that structure, players will build their brands and careers – on and off the court – in their local team markets and beyond.
At the same time, the PPL is building the media, partnership, and infrastructure to support players at every stage of their careers – and to create a clear path from youth to the professional level.
We've seen this model thrive in professional team sports. The result: superstars, loyal fan bases, and long-term earning opportunities for players, teams, and the league.
The model works because it is built around players.
The league and the sport won't succeed unless our players do. When players earn more, build their brands, and grow their careers, everything else grows with them – teams, fan bases, and the league. That's how we win and build something that lasts.
This is what we are building at the PPL:
A sport where players building long-lasting, high-earning careers is the norm.
A sport with teams and fan bases that show up with passion.
A sport that becomes part of culture – and lasts.
This moment matters. How we build padel now will define what it becomes.

At the Pro Padel League, we are building that future, and we are building it now.

Miami Defeats Toronto in Historic Opening Team Match of PPL Season

In the first match of the day, the San Diego women's doubles team jumped out to an early start taking the lead against LA. But, after not capturing a match last weekend, the LA women's team fought back hard and ended up taking the W against San Diego in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. In the men's doubles match, San Diego won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, forcing a deciding mixed doubles match the went to a third set deciding tiebreaker with San Diego coming out victorious after capturing the tiebreaker 10-7 against LA. In the last team matchup on Saturday between the Arkansas Matrix and Cancun Waves, a rain delay forced them to finish play on Sunday.
Sports and Entertainment Industry Veteran Rick Di Gironimo also Named Owner of the Toronto Franchise

Today, the Pro Padel League (PPL) – North America's first professional Padel league – is excited to announce that former Major League Soccer (MLS) Star and MLS Most Valuable Player, Sebastian Giovinco, has been named a Team Owner of the Toronto Polar Bears. The ownership group includes Josh Garr, President of a.p.i. ALARM Inc. – Canada's largest private Security Company offering residential and commercial security systems and surveillance systems. Joining Giovinco and Garr in the ownership group will be sports and entertainment industry veteran Rick Di Gironimo, CEO, Group of Companies, including Versus Sports Management & Entertainment and Versus Soccer League, Trio Sportsplex, and the Juventus Academy Toronto.
Giovinco, an Italian former professional soccer player who played as a forward, began his professional career with Italian club Juventus in Serie B in 2006. Signing with the Toronto FC in 2015, the deal made him the League's highest paid player. Among his trophies with the club are three Canadian Championships and the MLS Cup. Individually, he won the MLS Golden Boot, MLS Newcomer of the Year Award, MLS MVP Award, the George Gross Memorial Trophy for the most valuable player of the Canadian Championship, and the CONCACAF Champions League Golden Ball. Giovinco left the Toronto FC as the club's all-time top goal scorer. Later, in 2019, Giovinco joined Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal where he won the AFC Champions League in his first year with the team and the Saudi Pro League and King Cup in his second season. At the international level, Giovinco made his debut with the Italy senior side in 2011 and has since collected over 20 caps. He later took part at UEFA Euro 2012 where he won a runners-up medal. At the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, Giovinco won a bronze medal.
"I am excited to be a part of the ownership group for the first Pro Padel League franchise in Canada," said Sebastian Giovinco, Team Owner of the Toronto Polar Bears. "I look forward to the upcoming season with the Toronto Polar Bears."
The PPL's first Player Draft was held on March 20th and received approximately 500 hundred applications from top North American and international players from Australia, Asia, South America, the United Kingdom, and Europe. The PPL's inaugural season will kick-off in May of 2023 with seven teams and conclude with the PPL CUP in June of 2023 where the four best teams will compete for the title.
"It is an amazing opportunity to be involved from the ground level with the Pro Padel League and support the only Canadian team in one of the fastest growing sports in the world," commented Josh Garr, Team Owner of the Toronto Polar Bears. "We are honored to have Sebastian Giovinco and Rick Di Gironimo on our ownership team and be involved in growing Padel in Canada."
Joining the ownership group with Garr and Giovinco is Di Gironimo who is a sports and entertainment industry veteran. Since 1992, Di Gironimo has been convening, coordinating, and running leagues for soccer and ball hockey organizations in Ontario. In addition to owning and operating a soccer specialty store (which landed him a position as a national franchise chain retailer) and becoming a facility manager of a sports complex, in 2008 Di Gironimo started his own management company called Versus Sports Management & Entertainment (VSME) and Versus Soccer League. Still overseeing the operations today, VSME currently manages and operates the Adidas soccer fields in affiliation with Adidas Canada along with men's, women's, and youth leagues that have a total membership base of 5,000. Following this in 2010, Di Gironimo opened Trio Sportsplex (a 93,500 square foot complex) and, in 2017, he partnered with one of the biggest soccer clubs in the world, Juventus FC. Di Gironimo now owns and operates the Juventus Academy Toronto player development program along with Giovinco and together are taking the program to another level of professionalism. Later this year, Giovinco and Di Gironimo will be opening the first Padel courts in Toronto called T10 Padel.
"Sebastian and I are very excited to be a part of the Toronto Polar Bear ownership group. Our objective is to build a dynasty franchise and win the PPL Cup," added Di Gironimo, Team Owner of the Toronto Polar Bears.
The PPL's mission is to create a premier sports league providing a national stage for the sport while generating nationwide awareness and excitement for Padel. Something that has never been done before, the PPL will provide players and fans with a new platform that showcases Padel and grows participation in the sport.
Currently, Padel has over 25 million players worldwide and is growing in popularity in the U.S. with the number of Padel courts set to double in 2023. Over 8 million players are projected to be playing in the U.S. by 2030. We had 14 tennis courts, two padel courts and eight pickleball courts. We are now going to have four padel courts, and the way that we can build those additional courts is by converting tennis courts. The sport that is going to suffer at the expense of padel is tennis."David Eisen, one of the newest investors in the North American Pro Padel League (PPL), believes he is at the start of a revolution that will upend the existing order of racket sports. Given he has just acquired the Los Angeles Beat padel franchise, at a valuation of $10 million (£7.6m), it is probably in his interests to say that — and for his community's ratio of tennis courts to padel courts to swing further in his favor.Padel, played on an enclosed court using skills and rules that make it a kind of hybrid of tennis and squash, is experiencing a wave of investment in the United States, with PPL franchises being acquired at rising valuations. The league currently comprises 10 teams in nine cities and one state: Toronto, San Diego, New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Cancun, Los Angeles, Houston, Orlando and Arkansas.U.S. tennis player Frances Tiafoe, who is ranked inside his sport's top 30, recently became an adviser to the New York Atlantics PPL franchise, as part of a funding round that the league said exceeded $2 million. The deal valued the Atlantics at over $10 million, up from the $200,000 entry fee that franchises paid to join the league in 2023.Perhaps this explains Eisen's buoyancy. "I see the league potentially growing by leaps and bounds in valuations," he told The Athletic.Richard Nicolson, the president of the Miami team, pointed to other burgeoning leagues for inspiration. "The numbers are astronomical. Earlier in 2026, Los Angeles selected him with the ninth pick of the second round in the inaugural PPL II Draft. He later earned the opportunity to compete in the PPL with Las Vegas. The result also brought Cagigas’ path full circle: months after Los Angeles selected him in the PPL II Draft, he earned his first PPL win in a matchup against the Beat.
“We’re very happy to win this one together here in Mexico. I know it means a lot for El Loco and obviously for me. We’re already thinking about tomorrow because we want to get another win.” – Guille Cagigas

Jensen and Virseda Reach 5–0
Claudia Jensen and Veronica Virseda beat Miami’s Anna Ortiz Gasco and Lucia Martinez Gomez 7–6, 6–2, improving to 5–0 together in PPL play this season. The San Diego pair has now won every match they have played together in 2026. Their run includes victories over New York and DC during the New York group stage, followed by a three-set win over Florida in the women’s first-place match. In Playa del Carmen, they came from a set down to beat Los Angeles on Thursday before following it with Friday’s straight-set win over Miami.Miami answered in the men’s match with a dramatic win of its own. Alvaro Melendez Amaya and Jose Antonio Garcia Diestro beat Jose David Sanchez Serrano and Jose Jimenez Casas 7–6, 6–7, 12–10, with the matchup coming down to the final points of the super tiebreak.
DC Holds Its Place Atop the Standings
DC won both matches against Houston, but neither came easily. Las Vegas and DC Sweep Friday as Jensen and Virseda Stay Undefeated

The Mexico Waves swept the New York Atlantics to open PPL Playa del Carmen on Thursday. Mexico’s women recovered from a 6–1 first set, while the Waves men won in straight sets. Los Angeles and San Diego split the second matchup, with the Stingrays women winning a close super tiebreak before the Beat men took the final match.
Mexico Waves vs. New York Atlantics: A home sweep
New York’s Marta Talaván and Sofía Saiz Vallejo arrived in Playa after taking third in Los Angeles. With their fans rallying behind them, they controlled the super tiebreak 10–3 to complete the upset. Mexico’s women had not reached Podium Day this season; the win gives them a chance to change that, with another group match still to play.David Gala and Maximiliano Arce followed with a 6–2, 6–3 win over Ignacio Vilariño and Javier Martínez to complete Mexico’s sweep. Gala and Arce had won the men’s title together in Los Angeles. This time, Arce beat the New York pair that defeated him and then-partner Franco Dal Bianco in July’s third-place match.
Los Angeles Beat vs. San Diego Stingrays: A close call and a split
San Diego’s Claudia Jensen and Verónica Virseda lost the first set to LA’s Victoria Iglesias Segador and Julia Polo Bautista, then fell behind a break in the second. They recovered to force a super tiebreak, where the Beat led 8–7.Had Jensen and Virseda lost the next point, they would have faced two match points. Instead, Jensen capped the best point of the match with a passing-shot winner to level the tiebreak at 8–8. They won the next two points to complete the comeback, 4–6, 6–3, 10–8.The men’s match gave fans a chance to see Leonel “Tolito” Aguirre on the left alongside left-hander Denis Tomás Perino. The LA pair beat San Diego’s José David Sánchez Serrano and José Jiménez Casas 6–4, 6–4, breaking serve in the tenth game of each set.The win gives LA’s men a real chance to qualify for Podium Day for the first time season. Las Vegas is their final group opponent in Playa, and a place among the top four men’s teams would send them through to Sunday. Group play continues Friday, with Podium Day places still open in both divisions. MEXICO AND SAN DIEGO WIN PLAYA DEL CARMEN TITLES AS RACE TO MIAMI TIGHTENS

Investment by Figueras Supports Team's Growth in Palm Beach as Padel Booms in the U.S.
Goats PPL II Squad to Kick Off Season at Miami Open on March 15
The Florida Goats, one of the most successful franchises in the Pro Padel League (PPL), today announced that international polo star Nacho Figueras has joined the team's ownership group through a significant investment. Padel is the world's fastest-growing sport and is rapidly gaining traction across North America, with Palm Beach emerging as one of the sport's most dynamic new markets. The Goats recently relocated from Orlando to Palm Beach following a historic run in the Pro Padel League, capturing the inaugural PPL City's Cup in 2024 and finishing first in the 2025 regular-season standings.
"I've dedicated my life to sport, first through polo and now through padel," said Figueras. "Padel has always been an important part of life in Argentina, where I grew up, and it's incredible to see how quickly the sport is growing in the U.S. Palm Beach already has a thriving padel community, and it's the perfect place to help it grow even further. I'm thrilled to be part of building something special with the Goats."
"We are thrilled to welcome Nacho into the Goats ownership, as he embodies everything about the culture we are establishing for the team," said Florida Goats Owner & Chairman Steven Levin. "From our earliest conversations, it was evident that Nacho would be the perfect partner. He represents a lifestyle brand that speaks to our target audience, and his passion for the game, Argentinian roots, strong local connections, and business acumen will play a key role in the growth and expansion of our franchise"
Leveraging momentum from its first two seasons of competition, the Florida Goats are positioned for a strong 2026 campaign beginning July 9, when the Pro Padel League season opens in New York, followed by events in Los Angeles (August 13–16), Playa del Carmen (September 24–27), and Guadalajara (November 19–22). The season will culminate in neighboring Miami, where The City's Cup Finals will be held December 3–6.
The Goats' current roster for the 2026 PPL season features top-ranked women's players Gemma Triay and Paula Josemaría Martín, while the men's side is anchored by stars Leandro Augsburger and Jon Sanz.
While the 2026 PPL season begins in July with five events, the Goats' PPL II team will kick off its campaign March 15 at the Miami Open. Launched earlier this year, PPL II is a player development initiative designed to identify, support, and elevate the next generation of men's and women's padel players in North America. When the Goats take the court at the Miami Open for the inaugural PPL II tournament, they will be led by the No. 1 overall pick in the first-ever PPL II Draft, Vinny Di Francesco, along with second-round selection Miguel Briega. The pair will play their first match against the Los Angeles Beat on Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. ET.
The Pro Padel League continues to build momentum as investment and interest in the sport accelerate globally. PPL franchises the New York Atlantics and Los Angeles Beat were recently valued at more than $10 million. Figueras is the latest athlete to invest in a PPL club, joining ATP tennis star Francis Tiafoe and AFC Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Paes. Additionally, prominent investors across sports and business have backed PPL teams and the league, including Edward Rogers, chair of the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, who recently purchased a minority stake in the PPL's Toronto Polar Bears.

POLO ICON NACHO FIGUERAS INVESTS IN FLORIDA GOATS OF THE PRO PADEL LEAGUE

By: Lee McLaughlan
Women's world No 8 Sofia Araujo was the highest ranked player picked in this year's highly anticipated Pro Padel League draft.
The 29-year-old Portuguese star, who was a member of the winning Hexagon Cup team earlier this month, was selected by the San Diego Stingrays who had the third pick in the first round of the 2024 PPL Draft.
Having picked the highest ranked player, the Stingrays surprised everyone with their second round choice – Great Britain's Louie Harris who is ranked 446th in the world. However, the 21-year-old had a strong domestic season and was named the LTA No.1 male in December.
The 2023 PPL Champions, the Las Vegas Smash, went for 27-year-old Argentinean Gonzalo Alfonso and 24-year-old Spaniard Ignacio Vilarino, who is ranked 59th in the world.
2023 PPL Finalists, the Cancun Waves, who will be looking to go one further this year, went for the experienced Carolina Navarro as their first pick. They will be hoping the 47-year-old Swedish veteran, ranked 30th in the world, will bring her winning touch to the team. Navarro is one of padel's most successful players. She was the women's world . 1 for nine years and has won 100 international titles. Also joining the Mexican-based team, is Spain's 27-year-old Salva Oria who is 107th in the men's rankings.
This season's newcomers the Houston Volts, New York Atlantics and Flowrida Goats all had the opportunity to draft three players, courtesy of having the first picks in the expansion round. However, only the Volts drafted a full quota of three players with the Atlantics and Goats passing in the second round.
The Volts, the newest franchise to the PPL, went for a trio of young Spaniards who are expected to be amongst the next generation of stars. Claudia Fernandez Sanchez had the honor of being the first pick in the draft from more than 300 hopefuls. Sanchez, who turns 18-years-old later this month, is already ranked 24th in the world. She will be joined by 20-year-old Francisco Guerrero who is ranked 53rd in the men's standings with 22-year-old Marta Caparros completing the trio. She is currently ranked 35th in the world.
In contrast to the Volts, The Goats went for experience as they drafted Victor Ruiz who is the highest ranked male picked. The 34-year-old Spaniard is currently ranked 16th. He was joined by 40-something Nicolas Clerc, who is making a return to the PPL having played for Los Angeles Beat last season. Clerc is the USA Seniors Team Coach.
The Atlantics have the youngest player in the 2024 Draft selecting Spain's Andrea Ustero, who had her 16th birthday in December 2023. However, the teenager belies her age and is already ranked inside the world's top 40. Their second pick was also very astute as they recruited 34-year-old Argentinean Ramiro Moyana Toledo who is ranked 24th.
This season, there will be a return to PPL for Daniela Ruiz who was the final pick in the draft. The 27-year-old American, a member of the USA team at the 2022 World Championships and plays her padel in the US, will again wear the team colors of Toronto Polar Bears. The Canadian side had the honor of the opening pick in round one and selected Spanish 17-year-old Noemi Aguilar who is ranked 66th in the world.
For the Los Angeles Beat, they used the draft wisely with two solid picks. Spain's Jon Sanz, who is pushing for a spot in the world's top 20 men's rankings, will be joined by 22-year-old Italian Carolina Orsi. Italy's No 1 female player is currently ranked 27th in the world.
The Miami Padel Club gave Spain's Jose Jimenez an early 20th birthday present when they chose him in the second round. The Spaniard, who is ranked just outside the men's top 100, celebrates his birthday next week. He will be joined by fellow Spaniard and women's world no 21, Lucia Martinez Gomez.
Finally, the Arkansas Matrix is another team who have put their faith in a Spanish duo in the draft. Their first pick was Araceli Martinez who is ranked 45th in women's standings. They also chose 23-year-old Inigo Jofre, who is currently sitting at 94 in the men's list.
A total of 21 players were drafted – 11 women and 10 men. Players from seven different countries were chosen, 14 of them Spanish.
Following the draft, Marcos del Pilar, co-founder and commissioner of the Pro Padel League said:
"We could not be more excited to have some of the best players in the history of the game choosing to compete in the PPL this season. The PPL was created to highlight the amazing sport of padel for North American consumers and, as a byproduct of this, we are thrilled that the sport will grow along with our league. With the completion of the 2024 PPL Draft, we are now set for an incredible season of competition to start in April."
The league, which has secured a $1m prize purse for the 2024 season, will feature four rounds of matches, two in April and two in August, before the PPL Cup final in November.

PPL Coverage on CBC

It was an exhilarating opening weekend of competition for the inaugural season of the PPL! The Miami Padel Club made a strong statement of intent early on the first day of play, winning both the men's and women's matches against the Toronto Polar Bears. The Cancun Waves and LA Beat then went head-to-head in a long-drawn battle of intense Padel action, with both the men's and women's matches ultimately swinging in favor of Cancun. The final match of the day saw the women's teams from the Las Vegas Smash and Arkansas Matrix face off, with Arkansas ultimately taking the win. Matrix player Egle Petrauskaite gave everything and more that she had in the match, and, after capturing match point with her teammate Cata Tenorio, her teammates needed to help her off the court due to the leg cramps she was suffering from.
Sunday began with the Arkansas vs. Vegas Men's match, which had been delayed by rain on Saturday night. With Vegas capturing the match, it led to the first-ever Mixed Double's Tiebreaker in the history of the PPL, with Vegas taking the win. Meanwhile, the San Diego Stingrays played their first match of the weekend against the Toronto Polar Bears with the Stingrays getting the win in both the men's and women's matches. The Miami Padel Club then took on the Cancun Waves who offered some tough competition for the Miami, leading to some of the most exciting rallies and points of the weekend. Miami ultimately took the win in both the men's and women's matches. After a short break, the Arkansas Matrix then returned to the court, this time against the Los Angeles Beat. Arkansas won the women's match and LA won the men's match, leading to the second mixed tiebreaker of the weekend. The sun quickly faded during the mixed match though, resulting in Arkansas's favor under the court lights. With both of their matches going to a mixed tiebreaker, the Arkansas players ultimately spent a collective total of 23 hours on court during weekend one.
After the first weekend of play, Miami currently remains undefeated and leads the season scoreboard as we head into weekend two starting May 20th.

Ana Maria Cabrejas and Anna Cortilles celebrate their win for the Cancun Waves against the Los Angeles Beat.
